It is normal procedure for the monarch and senior royals not to undertake any public duties that could divert attention from campaigning – or appear to favour one political party.Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King has cancelled his public engagements for the rest of the week.

The Prince of Wales will no longer be undertaking visits on Thursday following updated guidance from Buckingham Palace.The two men spoke in the King’s private audience room as Mr Sunak informed the head of state of his intention to call a General Election.

The monarch normally meets his Prime Minister on Wednesday evenings for their weekly audience, which did not go ahead.
